We want lordos.org to be usable by everyone, including people who use a keyboard only, a screen reader, magnification or high contrast. Our goal is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, level AA. This statement covers the website; the accessibility of the LordOS distribution is described at the end.
What the website does today#
- Contrast: text and controls use strong colour contrast in both the light and the dark theme, aiming at the WCAG AA ratios.
- Light and dark: the site follows your system's colour scheme, and the theme button lets you force light or dark.
- Keyboard: every link, button and control can be reached and used with the keyboard. A visible focus outline shows where you are, and a "Skip to content" link is the first thing on each page. The screenshot viewer works with the arrow keys and closes with Escape.
- Reduced motion: if your system asks for reduced motion, the site turns off its animations and smooth scrolling.
- Structure: pages use headings, landmarks and labelled sections; images have text alternatives; each page declares its language (English, Spanish or Portuguese).
- Zoom and small screens: the layout adapts to phone screens and to browser zoom.
- No dependence on scripts: the content is static HTML; scripts add only conveniences such as the theme button, the copy button and the gallery filters.
Known limitations#
- Some screenshots show complex interfaces; their text alternatives describe them briefly rather than in full detail.
- The paper's PDF may not be fully tagged for screen readers; the same content is available as a web page.
- Donation pages are run by PayPal and Mercado Pago, and their accessibility is outside our control.
The LordOS distribution#
Accessibility in the desktop is still in progress: LordOS has a Reduce motion setting (Settings → Appearance), keyboard shortcuts and per-display scaling from 100 to 200 %, but a screen reader, screen zoom and a high-contrast theme are not available yet. They are on the roadmap.
